Hannah Kane wins at Hogg Hill

Southend Wheelers riders continued their fine form on a cold and blustery day at Hogg Hill on Saturday.

11 year old Hannah Kane produced another determined performance, finishing first girl and sixth overall in the under twelve’s race. Early heavy rain made for a wet track as riders battled the elements.

In the under 16s race, Simon Alexander turned in a fine performance in a strong field, to finish second, battling gale force winds on each lap of the race.

Three riders, George Pearl dad Graham and Peter Humphreys traveled to Matching Tye to compete in the 56 miles Ciclos Uno Road Race.

Despite the fact that this was junior rider George Pearl’s first ever road race, as usual he attached from the start, establishing a small lead. However the bunch was having none of this and quickly pulled him back. The bunch stayed tight for the rest of the race with no riders being able to establish a break away group. In the run up the short hill to the finish, Pearl sprinted away again to establish a lead, however stronger riders chased and caught him near the line and he had to settle for a creditable 29th place in the main bunch from a field of 60 riders.

Further back in the race were the two Wheelers veterans, George Pearl and Peter Humphreys, still working to convert their winters training into race fitness. Pearl pulled up before the finish, whilst Humphreys finished near the back of the race. All three will be in action again next week in the Maldon Road Race.

There was again a good turn out of riders at Canewdon for the training and Leisure rides.
