Jenny Patience wins Women National 10

On Saturday Southend Wheelers Simon Alexander, competing in the under 16’s race at the Redbridge Cycle Circuit at Hogg Hill, secured an excellent second place in the sprint to the line.

On Sunday in the Wheelers 10 miles time trial at Steeple, Alexander, riding a traditional road bike, recorded a time of 25mins, 50secs to gain another second place, exactly 1 minute slower than winner David Bryant, who returned 23mins, 50secs. Third place went to veteran Keith Dalton in 25mins, 43secs, while 14 years old Matthew Kane finishing in 29mins, 21sec, improved his personal best time again. Other improvements went to James Kane, Carol Cartwright, Adrian Cartwright, Martin Elms and Martin Harris.

Veteran rider Jenny Patience traveled to Newbury in Berkshire to compete in the Woman’s National 10 Mile Championship. On a hilly course, Jenny recorded a season’s best time of 26mins, 18secs, good enough to secure first place in her age group. The overall winner was Julia Shaw in 21mins, riding for the Utag Yamaha club.

Wednesday saw the Wheelers at Steeple again for their evening 10 miles time trial. Top spot again went to David Bryant with a time of 24mins, 27secs. Second place went to veteran Mike Hennessy who returned exactly 26mins and third place went to Arthur Knowler in 26mins 15secs. Another personal best time of 29mins, and 8secs was recorded by 14 years old Matthew Kane, who has improved his time in every event this season. Jenny Patience was first lady who finished in a time of 27mins 14secs.

After Sunday’s time trial, most of the competitors cycled back from Steeple to Canewdon for elevens’s, where the Wheelers social and training rides continued as usual.
