Last Wednesday evening saw twenty seven riders competing in the Southend Wheelers annual Non-Aero 10 miles time trial at Steeple. This event can only be ridden on standard road bikes with no aerodynamic equipment. No disc wheels, triathlon handlebars or streamlined protective helmets. The idea is to make a more level playing field for those riders who do not have aero equipment. However, although 2 minutes slower than his normal time, David Bryant still took the honors with a time of 26mins, & 6secs. He was closely followed home by veteran Mike Hennessy returning 26mins, 33secs, with Robin Bevan 3rd fastest in 27mins, 12secs. Jenny Patience was fastest lady in 28mins & 2secs. Five Southend riders line up for the start, David Bryant, Graham Pearl, Simon Alexander, Mike Knot and Mike McCarthy, competing in his first ever race. The pace was hot right from the start and in spite of efforts to break clear by Alexander and Bryant, the race stayed together and finished with a large bunch sprint to the line. Pearl, Bryant Alexander and Knot all finished in the bunch, but out of the podium places. MacCarthy, after a brave effort to stay in the running, was tailed off half way through and finished a lap down. The club’s 25 miles time trial scheduled for early on Sunday morning was cancelled due to torrential rain and very overcast skies. The organizer therefore deemed it prudent not to proceed with the race in those conditions. A few hardy members met at Canewdon for the social rides later when the weather improved. |
