Team Cambridge Open 10 and racing from Dunton

On Sunday Southend Wheelers David Bryant, traveled to Cambridge to compete in the Team Cambridge Open 10 Miles Time Trial. In good conditions he recorded a superb personal best time of 21mins, 29secs, however this was not good enough to achieve a podium place. Fastest rider in the event was Peter Balls, West Suffolk Wheelers, who raced round the course to finish with a time of 19mins, 25secs, an average speed of almost 31 miles per hour.

The Wheelers Sunday training and social rides took place at Canewdon with a good turnout of members.

Wednesday saw the Wheelers out at Steeple for their evening 10 miles time trial. David Bryant predictably recorded the fastest time of 23mins, 59secs, followed by Mike Hennessy with 26mins, and 6secs. Jenny Patience took 3rd spot and was first lady in 26mins, 49secs.

On Thursday six Southend Wheelers members, Mark Elms, dad Martin, Nigel Beeson, Mike Knott, David Bryant and Terry Butcher, competed at Dunton in the Ford Cycling Club’s final 4th category race of the series. The pace was fast right from the start with small groups of riders trying to break clear from the main pack. Mark Elms was prominent in these attacks, but none succeeded and about 40 riders contested the sprint finish. Mark Elms attacked early in the wind assisted finishing strait, trying to repeat his win of two weeks previous. However, he was beaten to the line by half a bike length and had to be content with the creditable second podium spot. The remaining Wheelers, except for Nigel Beeson who finished one lap in arrears, all finished in the main bunch.
