Over one hundred Southend Wheelers members and friends, gathered at Canewdon to celebrate Peter Brown’s 8oth birthday. Peter has been a club member for sixty two years and for most of that period he has been the club’s timekeeper and served in various capacities on the clubs committee. Following the normal training and social rides, a short time trial of 3.7 miles was held on local roads. From a field of 41 starters, David Bryant was predictably fastest in a time of 8mins, 23secs. Veteran Arthur Knowler took second spot with 9mins, 21sec, closely followed by Mark Elms with a time of 9mins, 35secs. Fastest junior rider was Matthew Kane in 11mins, 40secs just 5secs ahead of new member Peter Dear who finished with a creditable 11mins, 40secs. Fastest Lady in 16th place was Alison Horsley in a time of 10mins, 57secs. The time trial was followed by a buffet organized and prepared by Jane Harris and Pat Silvey in conjunction with several more of the Wheelers lady members. On Wednesday the Wheelers held their last 10 miles time trial of the season out at Steeple. On a blustery evening David Bryant reigned supreme to record the fastest time of 23mins, 48secs with veteran Arthur Knowler in second spot with 26mins, 24secs and veteran Martin Elms third in a time of 27mins, 14secs. Jenny Patience was first lady finishing in 27mins, 51secs and new member Peter Dear, returned a time of 32mins, 56secs for first junior. Full Time Trial Results can found by clicking here The Wheelers will be at the Hogg Hill Racing Circuit on Bank Holiday Monday promoting their annual Holiday Criteriums for all categories of riders. Racing will commence at 9 AM with the first of the four race schedule, which ends at 1 PM. Entries can be accepted on the morning and spectators are very welcome. |
