Hill Climbs and Time Trials

Southend Wheelers Mark Elms scored an excellent 4th place in the Eastern Counties Cycling Association Hill Climb on Saturday. The event was held out at Little Baddow and the riders had to climb North Hill twice to qualify, the two times being added together for the final result. Elms total time was 3mins, 15secs that was very fast considering it was his first attempt at a hill climb and good training for the Wheelers club hill climb on 1st November on the same course. The top podium spot went to Mark Arnold, API Metro who recorded 2mins, 48.5secs for his two attempts.

On Sunday the Eastern Counties held a 3 man 24 miles team  time trial on a testing course out at Great Totham. The event was organized on their behalf  by the Southend Wheelers. Two teams entered from the Wheelers, a veterans team comprising of Terry Butcher, Mike Knott and Martin Elms and a youth team of George Hannah, 15, Liam Ellis, 15 and Niall Swanwick 14 years old. In a team time trial the three riders in each team ride together, taking it in turns to share the work at the front. The veterans returned a creditable time of 1hr, 8mins, and 49secs for 8th place. The youth team, all riding in their very first time trial of any kind, turned in a good performance with a time of 1hr, 18mins, and 35secs for 11th place. The winning trio of  Ewan Hendon, Dean Lubin and Nicola Juniper all very fast time trialists in their own right riding for Ciclos Uno,  finished with an excellent time of 56mins, 21secs.

Matt Kane and Dad James chose to ride in the Maldon and District CC’s club 25 miles time trial at Steeple as guest riders. On a cold autumn morning Matt, riding in his first 25 miles event, returned a creditable time of  1hr, 22mins, 51secs and dad James finished just ahead in1hr, 21mins, 43secs. Fastest on the day was David Bradnam, riding for Flitch Crono, who finished in 1hr, 4mins, 55secs.

The Sunday training and social rides at Canewdon went ahead as usual, although the numbers attending were down due members at the events above.
