On Sunday Southend Wheelers held their annual Hill Climb Championship out at North Hill, Little Baddow. In atrocious conditions, about fifteen riders braved the elements and set out from the Southend area to cycle the eighteen miles or so to the start. They had arranged to incorporate the event in their normal Sunday training ride. However, on reaching the start, very wet from the torrential rain, only seven brave riders elected to compete. Junior rider George Pearl took the top podium spot and the championship cup with a very good time in the foul conditions of 2mins and 3secs, for the approximately half mile long hill. Second place went to veteran Terry Butcher with a finishing time of 2mins and 36secs, a winner of this event a number of years ago. Third place was taken by new junior member Peter Dear who recorded a creditable time of 2mins and 39secs in his first ever event |

Most of the riders then made their way straight home for hot baths. However, a few cycled back to Canewdon to enjoy hot drinks and cakes at the village hall, open as usual for the training and social rides. This was the last Wheelers event of 2009, except for the “Christmas Pudding” 10 miles time trial that is traditionally held on the Sunday morning prior to Christmas, this year on 20th December out at Steeple. A large entry is expected for this popular event that is followed by a Christmas lunch catering for sixty people that is already fully booked. The full results from the club Hill Climb are: -
