Southend Wheelers Cycling Club

Three of the Southend Wheelers have started early season racing in preparation for the season proper starting in the spring. The East London CC winter circuit races at Hogg Hill.

Graham Pearl (50 this week) rode in the 4th category race was satisfied with this early performance although just outside of the, all important, top ten positions. Phil Holloway (43)and George Pearl (17) rode as 3rd Cats, in the Elite, 1st, 2nd and 3rd category handicap event. The 3rd cats were given a lead of 40 seconds which they steadily extended to 1 minute. At halfway it was clear the 3rds were going to hold of the quality field behind them and they settled down to the business of racing. The pace remained high throughout which reduced the opportunity for breakaways although Pearl did ‘test his legs’ taking a lead of 50 metres which he held for a lap and a half before going back to the bunch to recover in readiness for the uphill finish.  In the sprint for the line Pearl finished a creditable fourth and Holloway eighth. Many more of the Wheelers were riding at Canewdon on Sunday in their regular training and social rides based out of the village hall.
