Winter Racing News

On Saturday, four Southend Wheelers youth riders competed in the Lea Valley Winter Series races at the Redbridge Cycle Circuit, Hog Hill

In wet and windy conditions, 14 years old Matt Kane, riding his first race for two years and novice rider 15 years old Liam Ellis competed in the under 16’s race and in a strong field finished in creditable 7th and 8th places respectively. In the under14’s race, 12 year olds Fergal Swanwick and Hannah Kane tackled their first race round the full hilly circuit to also finish in 7th and 8th places, with Hannah being the second girl home. These four young riders showed great determination in challenging conditions in the first race of the season and have a promising year ahead.

On the same day, Phil Holloway was competing in the Elite/1/2/and 3rd category race at the Hillingdon Cycle Racing Circuit in the West London outskirts. In this very competitive race, Jerome Walker riding for Sigma Sport, broke clear of the main field early in the race. Holloway with three other riders gave chase but were unable to catch Walker before the finish and Holloway had to settle for a creditable 5th place, one minute ahead of the main field. However, this was a good start to the season for Holloway competing in races at the highest level of the sport.

In bright sunny conditions, there was a good turnout of members at Canewdon on Sunday for the training and social rides after they were prudently cancelled the previous week due to icy roads.
