2009 Awards Dinner

Southend Wheelers Cycling Club held their annual Dinner and Awards Presentation for the 2009 season at the Hollywood Restaurant in Thundersley last Saturday, when 84 members and friends sat down for the meal. David Whybrow, Club President, was then called upon to present the awards.
 

The top honours went once more to David Bryant who scooped the Club Championship Trophy and the Best All Rounder Cup together with many other trophies. The Veterans Championship and the Vets Sunday League was won by Keith Dalton. Mike Hennessy dominated the Veterans Wednesday League to take this title and the Haden Trophy for fastest vet in any 10 miles time trial.

Matthew Kane 14 won the awards for the Sunday and the Wednesday under 16 Youth Leagues, the Junior 10 Miles Cup and the Juvenile Cyclo-Cross Cup. Sister Hannah 12 was awarded the Brian Stroud Memorial Cup for the best female performances in cyclo-cross events. Mum Julie was runner up in the Ladies Wednesday league and dad James took third spot in the Sunday Veterans Time Trial league.

The Juvenile Time Trial championship was won by Simon Alexander who also won the Easter 10 miles Cup and was runner up in the Sunday and Wednesday juvenile time trial leagues.

Outstanding lady rider Jennifer Patience won the Ladies Wednesday time trial league, was runner up in the Veterans Wednesday TT league and was awarded the Ladies 10 miles Shield for the fastest 10 miles time trial of the year.

Arthur Knowler took the 100 miles Time trial Championship Cup and the Mignot Trophy for the fastest average speed at 25, 50 and 100 miles. Veteran Ian Mackenzie again won the 12 Hours Championship Cup.

Turning to road racing, veteran and national title holder Mike Brushett was awarded the trophy for the best performances in all open events, together with the Road Race Points Trophy. Outstanding young rider 16 years old George Pearl was awarded the Most Improved Rider Trophy and the Ian Henly Cup for most British Cycling points gained during the season. George also won the Hill Climb Cup, the 10 miles TT Mountain Bike Cup and took the trophies for the Junior and Senior Club Road Championships.

The prodigious Ted Parsons Rose Bowl awarded for services to the club and decided by secret ballot by the club committee, was presented jointly this year to husband and wife duo Martin and Jane Harris. The award was made for Martins outstanding work in re-organizing and maintaining the club’s website and to Jane for generating interest in and organizing so well the clubs social activities. Jane was also presented with a bouquet of flowers as a thank you for organizing the Dinner. The evening was rounded off with dancing to a disco.

The following morning the usual Sunday social and training rides at Canewdon were well attended with about thirty members taking part.
