On Sunday 6th February the Southend Wheelers organized their annual Reliability Trial/Cycle Sportive, from which all of the profits are traditionally donated to charity.
In this year’s event starting at East Hanningfield on a cold but dry morning, a record breaking 235 cyclists took to the quiet country roads of Essex in small groups with a choice of two routes to follow, 100 kilometers or 40 kilometers.
182 riders chose the longer route and 53 the short route. Most riders successfully completed the courses and received a certificate for their efforts.
The profits from the event combined with additional generous donations from riders amounted to a magnificent 950 pounds, which will be donated to Cancer Research UK, the charity that Southend wheelers choose to support
Apart from the helpers, which included the ladies serving refreshments for more than 6 hours, many of the Wheelers members of all ages completed the courses.
This included 12 years old Hannah Kane, electing to ride the shorter route, right through the age groups to veteran cyclist 80 years old Roy Godbeer, who chose and successfully completed the longer route.
On Saturday Phil Holloway competing in the Winter Series of races at the Hillingdon Racing Circuit in West London, took a creditable 10th place in the Elite, 1 2, and 3rd category race.
Training and social rides will resume again at Canewdon next Sunday at 9.00 am and 10.00 am respectively.
