Southend Wheelers held the first of their season long evening 10 miles time trials out at Steeple on Wednesday. On a very cold evening Robin Bevan took the top podium place with a time of 25mins, 47secs.
Keith Dalton took second spot with 27mins, and 7secs, closely followed by Mark Elms returning 27mins, 25secs.
Fastest under 16 youth rider was Matt Kane with a creditable 28mins, 58secs, while sister, 12 years old Hannah
in her first ever time trial, recorded an excellent 36mins, 20secs in the unhelpful weather conditions.
Fastest
lady was Jenny Patience in 28mins, 26secs, followed by Denise Kemp in 31mins, 41secs, whose return to cycle racing
is welcomed after an absence of 25 years. Denise, now a veteran, is still the holder of several club junior records,
so her return is watched with interest.
On Sunday Junior George Pearl, fresh from his win last weekend, traveled with Peter Humphreys to Haverhill to
compete in the Essex Road Race league’s 50 miles race. Unfortunately both riders suffered punctures which
effectively put an end to their race.
Also on Sunday the training and social rides continued at Canewdon with a good turnout in mixed weather conditions alternating between sunshine and showers.
