Southend wheelers veterans were in action on Tuesday at North Weald Aerodrome circuit. Mike Brushett and Fred Little put in excellent performances to finish 2nd and 3rd respectively in the race for over 70’s. The race winner was Arnold Russell riding for the Ciclos Uno Club. On Thursday, club president Dave Whybrow achieved an excellent 2nd place on the podium in the League of Veteran Racing Cyclists over 60’s race at the Ford Dunton test track. Winner was Colin Mannakee of the Glendene CC.

Wednesday saw the Wheelers once again out at Steeple for their weekly ten miles time trial. On a cold and windy evening, Robin Bevan proved to be the strongest returning a time of 25mins, 9secs to command first place. Keith Dalton was runner-up in 26mins, 15secs followed by Mike Hennessy in third place with 27mins, 19secs. Denise Kemp claimed top spot for the ladies, returning a time of 30mins, 32secs, followed by Julie Kane in 35mins, 32secs. Fastest junior on the day was Matt Kane returning 28mins, 36secs, while sister, 12 years old Hannah, returned a creditable 34mins, 41secs, to beat mum Julie by 51secs.

On Sunday the Wheelers were again out in force at Canewdon for their training and social rides.
