Roy Godbeer Non-Aero TT

On Tuesday Southend Wheelers veterans were competing at the North Weald airfield circuit. Club President Dave Whybrow took 3rd place in the over 60’s race and Roy Godbeer was 3rd to winner Arnold Russell, Ciclos Uno Club, in the over 70’s race.

The Wheelers were out at Steeple on Wednesday for their annual “Non-Aero” 10 miles time trial. In this event competitors are only allowed to ride traditional “road bikes” with no aerodynamic aids, such as triathlon handlebars, disc wheels or streamlined helmets. On a warm sunny evening Mike Hennessy returned the fastest time of 26mins, 50secs, closely followed by Mark Elms in 26mins, 59secs and Peter Humphreys taking 3rd place with 26mins, 9secs. Fastest lady was Denise Kemp improving her best time by 46 seconds to return an excellent 28mins, 25secs. Jenny Patience was in second place with 29mins, 2secs. Matt Kane was fastest junior recording 28mins, 19secs. 

On Sunday the Wheelers were out at Canewdon for the training and social rides. These were followed by a short 3.7 miles time trial. On a very warm and sunny afternoon, 26 riders took  the start line. Junior George Pearl powered round the course at an average speed of 26.1 mph to return the fastest time of 8mins, 29secs. Runner up was another junior Simon Alexander in 8mins, 56secs, followed by senior Mark Elms in 3rd spot with 9mins, 17secs. Fastest veteran and in 4th place was Mike Hennessy in 9mins, 40secs. Fastest lady in 7th place overall was Denise Kemp recording 10mins, 11secs. Fastest youth rider was 15 years old Matt Kane finishing with 10mins, 36secs. 

The race was followed by tea and cakes provided by the ladies for the fifty or so members and friends present.

In other racing news George Pearl raced to a top 20 place for 2nd and 3rd Cat riders in the Cycling Weekly Support Race at the Smithfield Nocturne on Saturday June 19th. He was also awarded the prize for the Most Aggressive Rider.

On Thursday June 24th in the LVRC Vets races at Dunton, Dave Whybrow finished in 6th place in the over 40's race and Martin Elms, Terry Butcher and Mike O'Kill all finished unplaced.

On Saturday June 26th in the Rapha Condor races at Hog Hill in the over 60's race Dave Whybrow finished in 8th place and Roy Godbeer in 10th and 1st in Cat H. In the 3rd and 4th cats race, Simon Alexander finished unplaced.
