On Tuesday Southend Wheelers veterans were in action at the North Weald Aerodrome circuit. Club President, Dave Whybrow secured an excellent 2nd place in the over 65’s race, while super vet Roy Godbeer took third spot in the over 70’s race. 

On Thursday seven Southend riders took the start line in the Ford CC 4th Category race in a field of 38 riders at the Dunton Test Track. A number of breakaway attempts were made by Graham Pearl and Martin Elms but to no avail and the race ended in a mass sprint for the line in which Elms claimed 6th place, Pearl 11th, Mike Knott 12th, Ben Willy 19th and Dave Whybrow 22nd. The winner was Martin Ryan from the Ford CC. The series leader at present is Jason Rogers, Gateway Veterans CC with 392 points. Southend placings are; Knott 4th with 311 points, Elms 5th, 308 points, Pearl 8th, 275 points, Whybrow 10th, 262 points and Ben Willy 13th with 236 points in a total field of 82 riders.   

Wednesday saw the Wheelers out at Steeple for their 10 miles Time Trial Championship. On a fine evening Robin Bevan trounced the opposition to take the top podium place and the Championship Trophy with a very good time for the course of 24mins, 45secs. Marc Holdich secured 2nd place with 27mins, 19secs, with Stephen Dalby 3rd in 27mins, 29secs. Jenny Patience took the ladies trophy in a time of 27mins, 32secs, with Denise Kemp in 2nd spot with 28mins, 11secs. Matt Kane was fastest junior and youth in a time of 27mins, 39secs.

The training and social rides took place at Canewdon on Sunday as usual with approximately 40 riders taking part
