On Wednesday Southend wheelers were out at Steeple for their weekly 10 miles time trial. On a fine warm evening Marc Holdich improved his best time to return a winning 26mins, 32secs, closely followed in second spot by Stephen Dalby with 26mins, 44secs. Third place went equally to Peter Humphreys and Jenny Patience, both recording 27mins, 22secs. Patience also took the ladies trophy beating fast improving Denise Kemp who achieved another PB with a time of 27mins, 54secs. First junior and youth was 12 years old Hannah Kane who also improved her PB to 33mins, 17secs. On Saturday Jenny Patience, Roy Godbeer, Dan Tape and club president Dave Whybrow traveled to Sudbury for the CC Sudbury 104 km (105 miles) Audax Randonee, taking in quiet lanes round North Essex and Suffolk. All four completed the course and finished in the allotted time. On Sunday Southend Wheelers promoted their open 50 miles time trial based at Latchingdon in which the field of 38 entrants were competing for the prestigious Norman Wells Trophy. On a fine but windy morning, James Goward riding for the Farnham Road Club in Surrey, powered round the sporting course in a time of 1hr, 56mins, 40secs to take first place and the trophy. Second place went to local man Nick Hasler, Essex Roads CC who recorded 1hr, 57mins,13secs, followed by Andrew Leggett Stowmarket and District CC in third place with a time of 1hr, 57mins, 51secs. Fastest Southend Rider was Keith Dalton who recorded a time of 2hrs, 14mins, 11secs, for 19th place. A special prize was awarded to Dave Tyas of the Maldon and District CC for good sportsmanship when he stopped to help a fellow competitor who had crashed on a badly damaged section of road. Fortunately both competitors were able to continue to complete the course. Due to the number of members helping to run the open 50, the Sunday training and social rides were depleted. However a group left Canewdon early to ride out to Latchingdon to the 50 to watch the racing and returned later for refreshments. |
