On Thursday the Wheelers veterans were in action again this time at the Dunton Test Track for the League of Veteran Racing Cyclist races. In the race for A, B, C and D categories the pace was very hot right from the start. After a number of laps, Wheelers Phil Holloway broke clear of the main pack accompanied by API’s Martin Meades. These two working well together, built up a lead of 25 seconds with Holloway taking one of the intermediate sprint prizes. However, towards the end of the race the main pack started to pull back the leaders and with two laps remaining they were reeled in. As the bunch slowed when the two were absorbed, Dominic Gabellini, Rapha Condor club, immediately attacked and stayed clear to take the chequered flag for an excellent win. In the sprint for the line by the main pack, Pete Humphreys finished in 8th place, Mike Knott was 14th and Holloway 15th. In the race for Categories E,F G and H, Dave Whybrow finished in 5th place and Roy Godbeer was 9th. The winner was Dick Naylor, San Fairy Ann CC. Whybrow is lying in 1st place in the series for Category F. On Sunday the Wheelers regular training and social rides took place at Canewdon with a good attendance. |
