On Sunday in very windy conditions Arthur Knowler and Chris Hutson
completed the 70 miles Randonee on their Tandem.
Also on Sunday junior Simon Alexander achieved an excellent 8th
place in the 3/4/J Festival Road Race at Radwinter from a field of
60 riders. Winner was Scott Cousins from the Maldon and District CC.
On Monday morning Arthur Knowler was in action again in the 14 miles
Time Trial at High Easter.
Arthur returned a time of 39.00mins, for 12th place. The winner was
Phil Hersey from the Eagle RC with a time of 31.00mins.
In the 7 km "sprint" time trial, Arthur was on the line again to
finish with a time of 11mins, 30ssecs. Winner was Richard O'Rourke,
E17 Bikes, with a time of 9mins, 11secs.
In the afternoon, two Southend riders, Keith Dalton and Denise
Kemp were to brave the very strong and cold winds in the 10 miles
time trial. However, Denise, returning from a short holiday, had a
minor shunt when another vehicle ran into the back of their hired
camper caravan. When the recovery company were summoned they said
that it would be a couple of hours before they would be able to
affect a roadside repair. Realizing that she would miss her start,
she phoned dad who was at the headquarters to ask him to request a
start at the end of the field, which was granted. Baz and Eileen had
Denise's bike, shoes and helmet waiting at the start and she
eventually arrived as the time keepers were preparing to leave
having sent off number 70, the last man. Denise pulled on her shoes
and helmet and was on the line to start just 2mins late. In the
circumstances her time of 27mins, 58secs, was an excellent effort
and good enough to give her fastest lady award. However, at
this juncture it is not known how much time she will be penalized
for the late start. Keith also rode strongly to finish with a
commendable 27mins, 10secs.
With so few Southend riders competing in the Festival, it is not
surprising that we only achieved 49 points for 15th place from 43
clubs in the team competition. Some years ago the Southend
Wheelers won this competition on 7 consecutive occasions. The
winners this year were the Eagle RC with 509 points.
In the LVRC races at Hog Hill, Roy Godbeer rode into second place to
clinch the top podium position for category "H" in the series.
In the LVRC races at Blackmore promoted by the Finchley CC, Graham
Pearl finished in the main bunch.
