On Sunday October 23rd three Southend Wheelers teams travelled to Birch near Tiptree to compete in the Eastern Counties 21 1/2 miles 3-Up Team Time Trial, on a bright sunny morning with light winds ideal for the event. This event organised by Arthur Knowler was promoted on behalf of the Eastern Counties CA by Southend Wheelers. Surprisingly the fastest Wheelers team was the "B" team of complete novices to time trials, made up of Peter Wilson, Gareth Crompton and Gareth Sones who recorded an excellent time of 1hr, 3mins, 11secs, to finish in 8th place. They were followed in 9th place by the Southend "A" team of Martin Harris, Nicholas Kahn and Adrian Cartwright who recorded 1hr, 4mins, 28secs. The all ladies team of Carol Cartwright, Jane Harris and Hannah Khan, enjoying their ride in different surroundings, finished with a creditable time of 1hr, 21mins, 11secs, in 13thplace. Result Fastest team, St Ives CC, 47mins, 43secs. Martin Harris said "we had two objectives in this time trial. The first was to average 20mph, which we achieved. The second was to catch our wives, The Southend Wheelers Ladies Team. Unfortunately, the 18 minutes earlier start time for them was just too much for us to claw back. We all enjoyed this event and would like to thank Arthur Knowler for organising and all of the helpers and marshalls who make these events possible." |
