Cycle Southend recently held a series of Hill Climb
races up Pier Hill featuring both team relay and individual races.
Various Southend Wheelers took part.
In Round 1, the Wheelerthons (including Hannah Kane and Jordan Kemp)
were narrowly beaten by a team of older boys whilst the Southend
Wheelers Husbands (Nick Khan, Adrian Cartwright, Martin Harris & Adam
Jones) were drawn against their wives (Hannah Khan, Carol Cartwright,
Jane Harris & Emma Curtis). The husbands progressed to round 2 where
they faced Leigh Swimming Club. It was a fairly close contest until
George Pearl, riding as a stand-in for the Swimmers, sped up Pier Hill
to dump his club-mates out of the compeition. Elsewhere,
the Swanwick family also represented the Southend Wheelers with Peter
Swanwick helping to marshall the event, sons Niall and Ferghal racing in
a school team and wife Kathleen racing with a giant cigarette strapped
to her bike as part of the NHS Quit Smoking team.
Overall, it was a very enjoyable event that will
hopefully be run again in the summer.
