A message from the club Chairman Message to all club riders. A few weeks ago I received a complaint from a member of public stating that club riders were riding three a breast and 'racing' and that he had witnessed this on several occasions over a number of weeks. With this in mind, I am asking each of you to be aware of the following: 1) When you are out training in club clothing you are disciple of the club and therefore should behave in a way that does not bring the club name in to disrepute. You are also reminded that: 2) It is against the law to ride three abreast 3) It is against the law to race on the open road Further to this, when you are out training riding two abreast, you have an obligation to other road users to single out where traffic is unable to pass. Should you find yourself with riders who are not club members please remind them of the above, and inform them that their actions on the road can have a major impact on our club and our sport. Lastly, it is extremely important to me, that as a club rider your safety is not put at risk when you are out training. Thanking all of you in advance. Club Handbook |

Dr Bike - Encouraging cycling safety for schoolchildren As Sustrans Bike Officer for Southend, I work with schools to encourage children to cycle to school. One of the barriers that prevents children cycling to school and cycling safely is the condition of their bikes. I regularly come across bikes with amongst other things little or no brakes, loose handle bars, forks on backwards and punctures. The reasons for this are many and complex and out of my control. But suffice to say these bikes will probably never be maintained or see the inside of a bike shop. So if the children are to become cyclists they need help. Bike It Officers often arrange Dr Bike sessions in school where a mechanic carries out safety checks and adjustments and gives a written report of anything needing further attention. In these cases this is futile so we need to do something else. I have successfully applied for sufficient funding not only to safety check and adjust but also to replace safety critical components. During the month of March I will be teaming up with Southend Council to carry out the necessary work. They will allocate a qualified mechanic and cycling instructor to attend schools in March to safety check and repair bikes. This coincides with an incentive scheme Sustrans Bike It is running nationally. The Virtual Bike race will see children cycle to school in March to compete for some great prizes. Therefore there will be many bikes more than usual in school. I have estimated the Dr Bike team can get through 50 - 80 bikes per day. Some schools will have in excess of 150.To get through all the bikes that come in the Dr Bike team are going to need volunteers to help. I am going to be working with them some days but we still need more help. So if you are able to help even for a day or half day we can increase the number of bikes made serviceable and safe. A little of your time and know-how is all that is needed. If you are able to give up a bit of time for this worthwhile cause please let me know. It does not matter how much or little you know about mechanics or different types of bikes as all hands will be kept busy. The mechanic has responsibility for the safety of the Bikes. Help me help these children become regular cyclists. If you can help please respond by e-mail to Graham Pearl at
