RACING:
Road
racing is probably the best known of all the competitive cycling
activities.
Competitors start en-mass
in pre arranged categories depending on ability or age. The first
rider to cross the line is the overall race winner and prizes are
usually given for each category. Races are held on closed circuits
such as the Lee Valley Cycle Circuit at Stratford in East London
or on the open road under strictly controlled conditions.
To compete in the majority
of road racing events competitors must hold a racing licence which
can be obtained from British Cycling, The League International (TLI)
or the League of Veteran Racing Cyclists (LVRC).
How
do I get to go racing?
E-mail us mail@southendwheelers.org, or come to our club night,
see Social events page. During the Summer there are several opportuities
to take part at novice level, these races are held on off-road circuits
We hold a members only
club road race championship at Lee Valley Cycle Circuit each year
with trophies for junior, senior and veteran categories. The club
also organises an open meeting at the Lee Valley Cycle Circuit on
August Bank Holiday Monday each year. The racing programme caters
for all categories from Juveniles to Veterans. On the open road the
club organises annually , usually in May and under British Cycling
rules the 'Andrews Trophy' Road Race for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th category
riders. This race is one of a series in the Essex Road Race League
(ERRL).
Also on the open road
during July each year two veteran age related road races are held
under the rules of LVRC.
See the Events page for
details, and the road racing results page for the results of the
last races.
