Track racing

Sunday 14th July 2024

The Wheelers have a track day each year where the Club Track Championships are contested

at Herne Hill Velodrome, London SE24. 10:00-15:00.  The last championships in 2022  had 8 riders racing for the titles. Full results here. Katie Ann Elliston extended her winning sequence to 4 Club Track Championship titles, a new record! Cavan Burrows was the only other rider to get silverware, as the Junior Champion. Race day information here.  There is a survey on the club Facebook page to gauge the interest, with a suggestion that some of the championships could be raced on road bikes.

For those new to track cycling - visit the advice on the British Cycling website.

A track bike is the simplest of all racing bikes - one gear, no brakes and no fear! You can have the loan of a track bike for the session, there will be one available in your size! Bring your own pedals, shoes and helmet! There will be a new stock of De Ver track bikes to hire for our track day this year, supplied by South London cycling royalty - Maurice Buton.

A guide to Track cycling in the UK

If you want to progress and improve your track cycling, get a suitable track bike as soon as possible. The (seat tube) frame size can be 2 cms more than your road bike size. Bike storage is possible at Lee Valley Velodrome, but is expensive and has high demand. A starter track bike (new) is £450 + but there are pre-loved options on Facebook.

Race officials can also get some track time in with Taster sessions in between the Championship events if you want to try track riding, but not racing!
