When we are not riding our bikes

Reunion lunch Sunday 6 November 2022

Wheelers President Dave Whybrow contacted regular attendees on 2nd September, but since then we have been forced to make some changes to this year’s reunion lunch to be held on 6th November (1pm meet up for 2pm start).

The Skylark Hotel where we have always held the reunion informed us this week that the suite would have to change and that their Chef had resigned and was not being replaced so, whilst the use of their kitchens was available we would have to arrange the supply and preparation of food ourselves. This was clearly a dramatic turn of events.

We have however secured a booking close by at the Saxon Hall, Aviation Way  Eastwood SS2 6UN for the same times & date.

The meal will be waitress served but we have had to choose a set 4 course meal comprising: -

            Prawn Cocktail

            Roast Chicken & Vegetables

            Apple Pie & Custard

            Tea Coffee & Mints

Special dietary needs will be able to be accommodated e.g., Vegetable Soup starter, Mixed Fruit Salad Dessert and a vegan alternative to the main course.

We shall be able to provide table wine within the previously advised price of £33:00 per head.

For those who have already paid (thank you) we would ask you to confirm your attendance, for those who have not yet responded your rapid response is requested as we have to confirm probable numbers as soon as possible, via e mail to

The Saxon Hall is a superior venue, and we feel sure our Reunion will be better than ever.

Thanking you for your anticipated cooperation and attendance.

Best Regards

Dave & Malcolm

For those who are looking for a morning bike ride, contact  for more details of a ride starting at Chalkwell Park/A13 traffic lights for a ride along some of the Tuesday/Thursday training bash route.

Outside of cycling, the club organizes various social events throughout the year.

The year starts with our main social event in January – the Annual Awards Dinner, held in a local function room, this year was at the Chalkwell Park Rooms.  This gives members new and old and some guests the chance to see all the silverware and trophies that the club has to offer and the awards that members can aim to win over the coming season.  We also have speakers each year, normally from our local cycling community - 2022 saw Andy Lyons ex Southend Wheeler and now manager of Richardson's –Trek Elite race team speak about his life in Cycling when he was a Wheeler and how he progressed as an Elite rider, to running a team.

Summer sees the club’s annual barbecue, held at Canewdon Village Hall after club runs, this year's event was on Sunday 10th July.  This is also ‘club sports day’ – a chance to play all the fun team games, such as rounders, three leg races, and sack races.

In October or November each year we organise a Reunion lunch, where current and former members celebrate their time with the Wheelers. A chance for you to meet your cycling heroes (who may have taught you how to ride a ride properly?!)  Details in top panel on this page.

Christmas – each year we hold a Christmas Time Trial followed by Christmas lunch in a local pub.

In addition to the above events, other events maybe organized throughout the year such as quiz nights and meals after evening time trials.

There is always the chance to socialise after Sunday rides when all the groups return to Canewdon for tea, coffee and cake and a chat.
