At a super new venue, Saxon Hall, with a super old organiser Dave Whybrow. (Many thanks Dave).
Former Wheeler Ian Roberts brought along two bikes that he won National Championship titles on, the 1965 BCF Schoolboy Road Race Championship at Crystal Palace in front of a 40,000 crowd, and the 1967 National Junior Sprint Championship at Halesowen, West Midlands.
They are both Mercian’s (the go to brand in the 60’s in Southend) as they were sold at Jim Browning’s shop in Chalkwell (still there). Ian’s National Championship jerseys, gold medals and the editions of Cycling Weekly that covered his wins were also on display. Ian was in the Old Kent CC when he won these titles but joined the Wheelers in the 80’s on his return to the sport. Great show Ian!
