Not deterred by a chilly, misty Sunday morning 167 riders took part in Southend Wheelers first event of the year, the Spring Ride.
Despite the cold start, the atmosphere was anything but. Riders of all ages and abilities turned out for our first event of the year, choosing from four distances—14, 25, 45 and 60-miles. Every rider returned to East Hanningfield Village Hall to a well‑earned hot drink and slice of cake, all while helping raise funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MND).
25‑mile route
37 riders… headed out through Bicknarce, Hazeleigh, Mundon through Lachingdon on to Maylandsea, before returning via Cold Norton and Stow Maries.
45‑mile route
62 riders took on the 45-mile route which headed west from East Hanningfield towards Margaretting via Galleywood, descending the Viper and onto Highwood, through Willingale to Fyfield. Chipping Ongar followed as the riders made their way back via Hook End, Fryerning, Ingatestone and Stock. Passing Hanningfield reservoir, through South Hanningfield returning to East Hanningfield.
60‑mile route
68 riders… followed the same route out to Chipping Ongar, returning via Mountnessing and Billericay, then an adding a final loop through familiar South Essex lanes of Via Stow Maries, Cold Norton, Cock Clarkes and Bicknacre before a hot dink back at East Hanningfield village hall.
