As we look back at what’s been in the news for June, one thing is for sure – as the weather heats up, so has the racing.
Time trialling
The start of the month saw Dan Jenkins continue to produce his outstanding rides from the previous month. In the SPOCO 10 on the E91 course he produced a time of 22 mins 48 secs.
A week later in the Maldon CC SPOCO event Dave Pennington brought the Wheelers team home finishing in a time of 22 mins 16 secs, taking overall fourth place in the process, whilst Dan Jenkins (23:36) took sixth place. Paul Gribbon (25:30), Jan Harvey-Burns (25:56) and Jennie Page (27:13) all finishing inside the top fifteen.
The following week Paul Gribbon and Jan Harvey-Burns both achieved PB’s in the Maldon 50 TT –Jan reducing hers by 3 mins and whilst Paul by an astonishing 12 mins!
Part one of the summer season club Saturday morning 7-mile time trails started at Canewdon. The first event really testing all the riders as they battled extremely windy conditions, despite this Henry O’Kill still managed to produce a fabulous ride completing the circuit in 17 mins 1 sec. Week two the weather had calmed down and in the process Henry got faster, winning the event 16 mins. Other notable rides during the June events came from club Juniors Tom Womack (18:14); Emmie Brown (26:44); Paul Gribbon (18:26); Jan Harvey-Burns (18:44); Elaine Brumby (27:28).
Part two of the series commences early September and sees Andy Merchant leading the scratch and veteran’s leagues; Elaine Brumby leading the Women’s and non-aero leagues and Tom Womack leading the Junior league.
Road racing
Club veterans Dave Whybrow and Bob Barber both medalled in their respective age categories at the BMCR (British Masters Cycling Racing) Criterium National Championship held at the Northern Gateway Ciircuit, Colchester. Dave Whybrow taking gold and Bob Barber bronze. A week later it was the turn of Paul Hart, Dan Pugh and Jonathon Rouse who all took part in the BMCR (British Masters Cycling Racing) Criterium.
Club Road Race Championships
Towards the end of June the club held it Road Race Championships at the at the Northern Gateway Ciircuit, Colchester. The relatively flat circuit produced some great racing across several events from a Hand Cycling competition; the Women’s Road Race Championships, and the Championship Road Race, a team relay race and ‘Devil’ sprint event.

Track
Katie Ann Elliston was flying on the Herne Hill track in the Twickenham Open, winning all four races and the Mike Carter Memorial Race for the second year running. Meanwhile, super track vet, Bob Barber has been riding the Vets League at Herne Hill, south London, where he has achieved one first and two second placings, and the Brooks Cycles TL League, Newcastle under Lyne where he achieved two first and two second placings.
Non racing activities
Away from the racing club hand cyclist Rob Womack was testing his fitness in the in the Tour de Vale hills, a 110km charity ride over the Chilterns between Aylesbury and Bicester. Whilst some of the club women Julie Kane and Carol Cartwright completed the North Essex Velo Platinum 100k Audax. The course ventured into the rolling countryside of north Essex passing through Braintree, Finchingfield, Great Stamford and Radwinter before turning back south towards Debden, Broxted, Hatfield Broad Oak, Matching Green and back to the finish for a well-earned cup of tea.
