Clip in for a day of racing

Southend Wheelers are promoting two cycle road races this Sunday 28th April around East Hanningfield.

The first event of the day is the Andrews Trophy, a National B event open to senior male Elite, 1st, 2nd & 3rd category riders. Race organiser Trevor Mills says ‘With a full field of 60 riders expected on the day, featuring several local teams and one international team from China (the Bodywrap (China) Team), making their first outing in the UK we are in for some exciting racing.’

Racing continues in the afternoon with the Florrie Newbery Classic, a Regional A event for woman only and open to senior and junior female 2nd, 3rd and 4th category riders. Race organiser, Matt Stock says ‘This woman only event is a first for Southend Wheelers Cycling Club in its 101st year history, and the event name is taken from the first woman club member Florrie Newbery who joined the club 3rd February 1937. All the women riders on Sunday will be helping to promote their sport and honouring the pioneering spirit of Florrie Newbery in the process.'

The headquarters for both events is in the centre of East Hanningfield village, with the riders proceeding anti-clockwise direction along East Hanningfield Road, to the junction of Southend Road (old A130). They will then proceed along the undulating Southend Road to the junction with Pan Lane, turning left, then negotiating the two tight corners where they will finish at the top of the hill on their last lap. The winner of Andrews Trophy will come after a distance of 128km and the Florrie Newbery Classic after 100km.
