Women welcomed into the club
As we celebrate the Women’s Festival of Cycling over this week, is worth remembering that Women were not allowed to take part in lots of sports years ago, and cycling was no exception. Fortunately for Southend Wheelers the decision to accept women into the club came about in May 1939, when Miss F J Newberry, who had been social secretary to the then named, Southend & County Wheelers, senior men’s organisation, put the proposal forward with energy and enthusiasm.
Today, the number of Women within the Wheelers now totals around a third of its 170 membership, and although back it 1939 it was said ‘the girls will never be able to keep up’, which as we all know that’s not true, many club women have proved that point since 1939 and still do today, leaving some of their male counterparts lagging.
