Southend Wheelers celebrated the end of their centenary year at the weekend with their annual awards dinner.
Youth rider, Charles Langford celebrated his first season in Southend Wheelers in style at the weekend, collecting an impressive 15 trophies on the evening. Eight of the awards were for first place league trophies alongside being awarded club Hill climb champion; Youth time trial champion; Junior and Senior road race champion and the Jack Ivory cup for the best performance in an open event.
Special guest for the evening and on hand to present the awards was time trialist Kate Allan, National winner for 10, 25, Team Time Trial and Closed circuits titles during an impressive 2023 season. Kate also gave an inspiring speech to those present and spent the rest of the evening chatting to the award winners.
Jan Harvey-Burns brought home a further nine awards including the Woman’s 10-mile – Cecil Shield; the Woman’s TT championship cup; Veterans handicap cup; women’s Hill climb champion and the Bert Spencer cup.
Henry O’Kill won seven awards on the evening including the 10-mile TT Championship Cup; 50-mile TT Founders Cup; Ian Wiekstra Memorial cup; Time trial Championship Cup (Fastest average for 10, 25 & 50 Miles –28.00mph) and the Time trial Handicap Championship Cup. Whilst Paul Gribbon won three first places winning the Phoenix Cup (1st Sunday scratch league); Goss Brothers Cup ) 1st Sunday Handicap League) and the Bleriot Trophy (1st Sunday Veteran’s League).
Other league award winners included John-Paul Paduano who won one first, two second and three third place trophies whilst Paul White won two first, three second and one third place both riders competing in the Saturday scratch, non-aero and veterans Satuday and Sunday leagues.
Denise Kemp finished her season winning the Club and Women’s BAR (Best All Rounder) trophies, whilst Paula Scates won the Windsor Cup, the most improved rider.
Mike Street who unable to make the presentation due to health was awarded the Ted Parsons Rosebowl for services to the club during 2023.
Other award winners on the night included Chris Smith, Cheryl Perry, both winning sprint elimination awards; Barry Simpson – third Sunday veteran’s league; Adam Jones - second Saturday non-aero league and Elaine Cotton for her two first places in the club Saturday women's time trial and non-aero time trial leagues.
